Defining the Line Between Ego and Confidence

Defining the Line Between Ego and Confidence I’m frequently asked how an intern or young careerist can make the most of every possible opportunity. The answer is amazingly simple: “Impress the crap out of your boss!” HOW that is done is the real issue, of course â€" because the answer varies so much from person to person. However, there is one common factor among those who excel: demonstration of confidence vs. distribution of ego. With genuine confidence, interns can impress with their personality and through sincere hustle. Others achieve this through work ethic and being coachable. Still more rise above the rest through initiative, by solving problems and contributing without being asked. They are willing to contribute unabashedly with everything they have, and in doing so, will readily learn from successes and mistakes. In the best, confidence allows them to combine all of the above. Usually identified with an ‘S’ on their chest, I will go out of my way to make sure I acknowledge their potential, support their super powers â€" and become a champion of their career. What holds back those who never rise to this level, however, seems to come down to one issue: ego. With tons of passion and/or enthusiasm on display, ego and confidence can initially be confused. The difference is that ego keeps us from asking what we think may be a stupid question, or bouncing back from a mistake. Ego holds us back by creating insecurity… generating a fear of ridicule, perhaps, or of appearing weak; arrogance is often the over-compensation. The ego doesn’t want to be told it did something wrong. Without a doubt, it is inflated ego that keeps us from being curious and coachable. And for all of us, here’s the lesson best learned quickly: discovering the difference between ego and confidence will have a significant impact on your career. You, at some point, are going to be insecure. Undoubtedly, you are going to be wrong. Mistakes and you may become good friends. You WILL be judged. The person confident in their ability can leverage those less-than-comfortable moments â€" and be all the better for the experience. Think about this for a moment: Who do you respect most? Who do you want serving as your mentor? Who do you trust most in a team effort? Who makes the better leader? Who seems to enjoy the most success? The confident? Or the ego? Confidence comes from your core. Ego comes from your fear. How to Win at Office Politics

How to Win at Office Politics When youre able to win at office politics, promotions come more readily. You enjoy more money, higher status within the office, you are given more of a voice and tend to have better interpersonal relationships.  Often, those who are more politically savvy at work do better than those who are more intelligent, hard working or even qualified. While some people seem naturally adept at making friends and influencing others, some of us have to work at office politics. Even though it doesnt happen overnight, you can achieve a significant positive change in your ability to navigate and be successful with others at work heres how: 1) Stay away from manipulative co-workers: At work, there will be some co-workers who are controlling and seem to want to run over anyone who gets in their way. These people often know how to push others buttons and the emotions they stir up in others make those people look disoriented and unprofessional when its not them in the wrong. One of the best ways to win in the political game is to steer clear of these people. If its not possible, then you maintain professionalism and expect the same in return. When you feel that you are being manipulated or are being wronged by these people, politely set boundaries. READ MORE: Which Type of Office Worker are You? 2) Speak no bad of people: Making enemies is one of the worst ways to win at the office politics game the easiest way to make people resent you is to speak badly about them. While there are some corporate cultures who are full of people who are critical of one another, learn to rise above it. People who dislike you will go out of their way to block you from reaching your goals. 3) Speak in terms of other peoples interests: At both work and in life, people are too concerned with what they want. Well, if everyone is out to satisfy their own needs, you are more likely to get co-operation around the office if you talk in terms of their benefits. The most effective individuals at corporate politics know what interests each other individual at the firm. They know which employees want to make a difference and which ones want to simply do their job and go home for the day. They handle the two differently and play to their desires. 4) Appreciate other people in a sincere manner: People who are effective at office politics are not always taking actions towards getting what they want. As a matter of fact, these individuals are some of the least-selfish individuals in the office. They know how to make other people feel important. One of the deepest needs human beings have, either at work or at home, is the need to feel appreciated. When people act in a manner that goes against this desire, they are well on their way to creating a roadblock to success. In the End: Even as the business world always changes, the tactics to gain corporate favor around the office remain consistent.    Part of being successful is being able to integrate effectively within a working group. There are both right and wrong ways to do so.  The individuals who learn how to thrive in a political corporate environment are going to be worth more money and, on a personal level, are going to have heightened interpersonal relationships and better persuasion skills.

I should be sleeping now

I should be sleeping now Even though you know you need eight hours of sleep a night, you probably sleep much less than that. Me, too. Tonight, for example, when I should have been going to bed I made cupcakes for my sons classroom. I was so tired that I doubled the amount of sugar, and baked them anyway. They came out squishy from so much sugar, but, per my sons request, I added green frosting and silver sprinkles on top anyway. I said to myself, These are absolutely the most disgusting cupcakes ever. Then, two hours later, when I feared I was too tired to stay up to write a column, I ate three cupcakes. I told myself I would never stay up late for work again. But then I worried that I was probably lying to myself. So in an effort to really reform myself I have constructed a list of things to remember next time I see the clock strike 10 p.m. and I make no move to go to bed. 1. Sleep deprivation makes you act drunk. Occupational and Environmental Medicine reported that if you stay up for 18 20 hours in a row, your mental capacities are the same as those with a blood alcohol level of 0.1 percent, which is the legal driving limit. 2. You are smarter if you sleep enough. Scientists at the University of Luebeck found that when you sleep eight hours you solve problems that you cannot solve when you have not slept enough. So pulling an all-nighter seems fine, if you dont have to be smart the next day. But a lot of sleep-short nights mean a lot of stupid days. And sooner or later, it wont matter if you have the capacity, somewhere, to be brilliant. If you dont ever exhibit it because you never sleep, then for all intents and purposes, you are a slow thinker. 3. Creativity happens after a good sleep. Maybe the manic can get away with no sleep, but for the typically calibrated worker, sleep allows the brain to synthesize in ways that precede a great idea. Dmitri Mendeleev came up with the periodic table of elements by dreaming it. And Laurie Halse Anderson won a National Book Award Nomination for Speak, a book she dreamed and then woke up and wrote. 4. People who dont sleep are in denial. I have heard so many people say, I dont need eight hours. Okay. Fine. You need seven. But unless youre over 65, you need at least seven hours. You lie to yourself when you say you dont need the sleep, and the person who is hurt by the lie is you, because you never allow yourself to be your best self during the day. You never get to see what you can really do. 4a. I, by the way am not one of those people who says I dont need sleep. I always want more sleep. But Im still in denial. I am in denial all day, leading up to the sleep deprivation. I have opportunities to get the most important stuff done but instead, I do easy, unimportant things, like answer random emails. I keep saying to myself, I have time, I have time. But I dont have time. Not if Im going to get eight hours sleep. 5. The just-before-sleep part is magic. One of my favorite sensations is lying down to sleep but not falling asleep right away. My mind clears up, and I see all kinds of things that the tumult of the day obscured. Lying on the pillow with nothing to do is a luxurious feeling. But if Im not getting enough sleep, that time is gone; I fall asleep the second my head hits the pillow. Like all good addicts, I am telling myself, as I do this sleep deprivation thing tonight, that Ill never do it again. But really, I think getting enough sleep takes a huge commitment. You need to reorganize your life so that when its time to go to bed, youve finished all the essentials. And you need to make getting enough sleep and essential. I say you because Im not quite sure that Im there yet. But now at least I have a list of reminders for next time I see my bedtime slipping by.

Is politics broken - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Is politics broken - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Therere municipal elections going on all over Denmark next week, and consequently there are election posters everywhere. I dont think anybody imagines that those posters will actually sway a single voter, but everybody else uses them, so wed better too This kind of rote thinking and sticking to business as usual is just one reason Im convinced, that politics is broken. The political process has currently divided people into politicians, who formulate policies, and voters, who get to choose between those policies. Thats not good. And heres another idea: If youre brainstorming on how to improve your town/municipality/region/country does it make sense to generate ideas together with people who disagree with you? You bet it does. Its well known in business, that to stimulate innovation and creativity you need diversely populated groups, not just people who already agree with each other. And yet political parties formulate policies in isolation, unimpacted by the views of opponents. Heres an article that repeats some of these views for American politics: So is our politics broken? Without a doubt. Does technology have a role in fixing it? Yes, in part technology, for example broadcast media, helped break it. I think we can look to the Net and open source as a way to help revitalize our democratic processes. Technology is one way, but only as a tool to create a more participative political process that gives everybody whos interested a way to impact the political decision making directly. Im currently thinking on how this can be done if you have any ideas, let me know :o) Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles.
