Should You Change Companies or Careers - TheJobNetwork
Should You Change Companies or Careers - TheJobNetworkSo youre just not that into your job. Maybe you actively hate it and its making you intensely miserable. But before you go nuclear and quitask yourself a few questions first. It could well be that your biggest beef is not with your job, per se, but with a smaller aspect of it thats fixable. You might be able to save yourself the career 180 by taking a few minutes to figure out what the real problem is. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) First, ask yourself the following questions. What do you like and dislike most about your job? What are your favorite and least favorite parts of your current job? Sit down and make an actual list. Start with the stuff you hatethats probably fSo youre just not that into your job. Maybe you actively hate it and its making you intensely miserable. But before you go nuclear and quitask yourself a few questions first. remost in your mind anyway. Then force your self to come up with a list of aspects of your work that are not only tolerable, but perhaps even a bit enjoyable. If you cant think of anything that leaves you feeling fulfilled, then theres your answer. If you can, and the list of negatives are all about your supervisor or your particular companys policies, not your actual day-to-day work, then you might need to keep thinking before going for a career change. What vocabulary would you use to describe your boss and coworkers?Again, if these are negative, then it looks like you hate the people you work with, not the work itself. If theyre positive and youre still miserable at work, then it might be the work thats really got you down. What would your perfect employer look like?Fantasy baseball. Describe your dream employer. What kind of work culture and benefits would you want? What kind of supervision, training, challenges appeal to you? Describing what you dont like is a lot easier than coming up with what you actually want, but this is an important step. Now look at what youve come up with are you basically describing your current company or boss? And you still hate your job? That might mean you should change careers. At least now youll know what sort of company to look for when you do.Have you been in this ort anywhere else?If youve worked in your current job before, just at a different company, and you liked it, thats a good sign that you hate your company/employer, not your job. If youve never liked the workeven in a company drastically different from your current one, then, well, you have your answer. If you figure out that you do, in fact, want to change careers, keep in mind that it can be a daunting process. Nobody loves change. And switching careers takes a lot of effort, time, money, and logistical prowess. If youre sure you should, but are feeling hesitant, you might want to consider taking the leap sooner rather than later. The trick is to make sure you make a better choice this time around. That mean s doing a bit more soul searching. Here are three things to keep in mind so youll choose a career and job that you actually like (and will never have to go through this again).1. Pick your life, not your job.You may think you want to do a certain kind of work. You want the perks and prestige that go with it, perhaps. But look at the lives of the people in that job. Do they have them? Do they have any time to spend with family or friends? Are they fulfilled in other areas? Do they die young from excessive stress? Find a job that gives you the lifestyle you want first and foremost. That will guarantee youll be happier in the long term.2. Understand that the grass isnt always greener. You may catch a rosy outside glimpse into someone elses life in some other career, but remember that looks can be deceiving. Dig a little deeper than the veneer of what you landsee looking in. Find the discrepancies and complications before you start fantasizing about someone elses career. Spend more time thinking about what you like, rather than what looks shiny from the outside.3. Dont commit too fast. This is especially true if youre early in your career. Job hopping is becoming much less stigmatized. Search around a little bit before overcommitting to one path and getting stuck. Dont rush off to a graduate program in something youre not sure about, for example. Make sure you like it before you invest the time and money.Just remember ask yourself the hard questions, and follow your bliss as much as you can.

I Have 9 Income Streams Heres How You Can, Too
I Have 9 Income Streams Heres How You Can, Too If you are reading this article, you are probably a middle-income American trying to figure out how to make more money. According to Sentier Research, the zentralwert U.S. household income rose from $61,858 in May 2018 to $62,175 in June 2018. These numbers are relative to where you live, but to fruchtwein, it may leid seem like enough to pay the bills, feed your familyand save for retirement. Thats why many people seek ways to make extra money on the side of their full-time jobs.I have nine income streams. And I want to share how I got them, and how you can, too.1. My full-time job.Having a full-time job is something that is supposed to give us stability and a steady paycheck every two weeks. The good news is the unemployment rate in the United States has decreased since 2014, but everyone still seems to be a little nervous at where their next paycheck will come from. Thats why seeking more ways to make money is smart. Its a safety ne t if things go wrong with your regular paycheck.2. Blogging and freelance writing.Writing and blogging are near and dear to my heart. fruchtwein freelance writers will earn less than $10k annually. But if you have a talent for writing, this is an excellent way for you to earn an extra $500 or so every month. Its actually quite simple to start a blog using Wordpress, one of the most popular platforms on the market. Find your niche, and make some money writing about what you know and teaching it to others. You can start by learning how to do freelance blogging by joining Elna Cains writing course. She is a wonderful coach and does a magnificent job of walking you through the process of how to platzdeckchen up your own writers website, how to get great articles published and much more.3. Taking online surveys.Taking online surveys is a way to earn yourself a few extra dollars, depending on how much time you have to dedicate to it. One of the most trusted online survey companies is Swag bucks. You simply sign up to create an account and then you can also create your own affiliate ID account as well.4. Selling on Amazon.Selling on Amazon can seem intimidating. Its not my primary source of income these days, but it does earn me a nice little side hustle. Learning to sell on Amazon takes some time and there are a passion for retail, its worth a shot.5. Affiliate marketing.Affiliate marketing is a great way to earn some extra money simply by referring someone to the product that you are using. For example, I use a software company called Click Funnels to build my marketing funnels. Any time one of my clients sign up for their own account using my affiliate link, I get paid. If you want to learn about it, sites like Affilorama can be really useful. They offer extensive training courses covering A to Z on affiliate marketing. Trust me, this is a fantastic way to earn passive income month after month without lifting a finger.6. Network marketing.Network marketing or multi -level marketing (MLM) has been around for ages. Its gotten a bad reputation due to some misguided companies in the industry, but for the most part, if you get involved with a good company, you can make a great little income on the side.I started in the industry many years ago with a company called Synergy but ended up at Herbal Life, one of the longest-standing, most reputable MLM companies out there today. I use the product myself, and I make a few bucks here and there. So, Im happy.7. Selling my skills on freelance sites. If you have a skill or talent say youre a web designer or graphic designer market your skill on freelancing sites such as Fiverr and Upwork. This is a vast marketplace where you can get new clients. You will see a lot of businesses going to these freelance sites to order logos, build websites, write sales copy pages. And if youre persistent about your brand, you can make some decent money.8. Renting my properties.Real estate investments are a great way to build a steady stream of income on the side. If you are interested in fixing up property or managing spaces, owning real estate rentals might be the thing for you. I own several properties, but hire a property manager to take care of them. This makes it pretty easy each month, although it eats at some of my profits.Getting started in real estate can seem expensive and difficult, but there are many different ways to invest in real estate that require different levels of effort. You can read Dave Ramseys intro to real estate investment to learn more about your options.9. Selling e-books.Think about the strongest skill set that you can teach to others, and turn that into an ebook. Is there something that you are good at that people have always praised you for? Is there a talent that you have that you think would be valuable for other people to know? You can easily put this into an ebook format that teaches people how to do the same thing, then charge them for it. Its a quick way to build a p assive income stream, which is always the best way to go.There are many different ways that you can earn extra money on top of your full-time job. If you notice, I tried to make a majority of these ideas as passive as possible, because I understand that there is only so much time during the day and on the weekends. You just have to have a creative mind and put your talents and resources to work for you.

Transition When a Job Turns into your Career
Transition When a Job Turns into your Career You have been with a job for over five years, and you know all the ins-and-outs. The business model is becoming clear You can start to see avenues of growth for your company that its not using and, now, youre getting frustrated that your ideas are going unnoticed. Every day, you go to work proud of what you accomplish, even if the job isnt in the field you always thought you would work in. Then it hits you This is your career. For some, this is terrifying as they realize they have put years of work and are too far along to quit without major financial repercussions. For others, its a relief as choosing a career was never something that interested them and they just wanted to find something they were good at and do it for a steady paycheck. The first clue to knowing you have gone down the path of career instead of temporary job is often in sheer time spent . If you have been working somewhere for more than five years, you are less likely to leave than ever before. Working for a long time in one distributionspolitik is good for you in many ways as it improves your chances of being hired by other companies as you seem dependable, and for the same reason your credit score can only rise the longer you hold down a job. Yet, if you are unhappy where you are, it can also be stressful. Most people dont make it to five years completely unhappy though so, if you are still sticking around there must be something about what you do that you like. If so, focus on that, and find a way where you could do more of that thing than the other duties you dislike so much. Choosing your career path is one of the most important first steps to take when you realize you are in one.Another tell-tale sign is how much financial dependency you have on a job. If you are in a position that moving would cause great financial harm, you are in a career. If this is somet hing that adds to that earlier stated unhappiness, start saving so you can make your way out with enough to titel your expenses until you find a second job. Otherwise, try to find what promotions are available and what you want out of your career there. Perhaps you want a specific role in the company? Find out what the requirements are for that job and go about achieving them. Go back to school if necessary, many jobs will actually help pay for classes if they are job related. Utilize that opportunity to get a better position. At the end of the day, realizing you are now in a career is not the worst thing you could have happen. Be thankful you have a job where you have been employed steadily and see if you can make good out of the bad parts of your job. If not, prepare yourself for your second career, knowing it will take time to get there.

Financial-Services Freeze Opens Up Networks Calendars
Financial-Services Freeze Opens Up Networks CalendarsFinancial-Services Freeze Opens Up Networks CalendarsWhen Michael nestkken found himself out of work in October 2008, he used the slump to make new contacts.Michael Benjamin realized he welches going to have a tough time re-entering the job force after being laid off last October from his financial-services job.I wasnt too junior, I wasnt too senior, I was the mid-level guy, he said. And thats who was getting laid off. Those jobs were the ones no one was hiring for. I had to think of a way to branch out, to find a fit.Benjamin worked as an institutional ausverkauf associate at Turner Investment Partners, a financial-services company headquartered outside Philadelphia. October 2008 was a tough time in the financial-services industry and at his small company Twenty-two people were laid off, including Benjamin.Looking for work with all the other financial-services people who had also lost their jobs when the market came to a screechin g halt last fall meant he was going to have to differentiate himself.Informational meetings lead to interviews But at first, he wasnt sure how to do that. I started my job search by calling everyone I knew, the SalesLadder member said. Most everyone said they had nothing at their companies, but they would give me names of other people to call, and I would call those people. I made phone calls, sent e-mails and had lunch meetings, he said. The benefit of being laid off during the financial downturn, said Benjamin, is that people who were still employed found themselves with some downtime. Nothing was happening in October and November, he said. I got a lot of meetings, because people werent very busy at work. They had time to talk to me.He said things started to break around January, when some of those meetings turned into conversations about actual jobs. And while he was hoping to stay within the area of institutional sales, he also started to branch out. Thinking that he could make a lateral move, he applied for analyst and research roles as well as sales. I was honest with the people I spoke to, he said. I told them, I have internal and external sales experience, and Im ready to make the next jump. But I was hearing I wasnt qualified. It was a little disheartening, but Benjamin kept moving forward. His former employer provided a job counselor who guided him through some of the ins and outs of looking for a job. It was the job counselor that told him about Ladders. He had been looking on other job boards but decided to try Ladders site.It was there that he found a position that sounded challenging and fit a lot of his search qualifications. The position, for a senior institutional sales position at an investment management firm in Philadelphia, was also a bit more senior than his previous job. But he thought it was worth a try. The recruiter who received his resume was glad he had, as well, but for different reasons. The recruiter thought I would be a great fit for a technology and software company that offers analytical tools for financial services companies, he said. She told me about the job, and it sounded interesting. Even though the job was in northern New Jersey, as opposed to Philadelphia, he was open to the idea, and told the recruiter hed like to pursue the opportunity.A few days after that first conversation with the recruiter, he did a phone interview with the hiring manager. A week later, he traveled to New Jersey for his second and final interview. In just three weeks, nearly seven months of unemployment came to an end with a job offer. He began his new job, as VP of sales for Markov Processes International, in early July. Its a little ironic, he said, that for this position, which I never would have thought of on my own, he was hired so quickly, while other jobs which were in his field were not so quick to hire. I still have outstanding positions that I interviewed for four months ago that I havent heard back from. They still havent filled those jobs.Leveraging finance knowhow for technology sector In the meantime, his new employer was also waiting for the right candidate. They told me they had been looking to fill this position for the past six to nine months, and that I was the right fit, he said. The new company looked at his asset-management experience as a calling card. I know how asset management works, he said. I know how to get in the door, I know how these firms are structured, and I can figure out who to ask for. The hard part is learning their software but the sales part is the important part, and thats what they hired me for. All these firms need analytical tools to go over their portfolios. Theres a lot of competition in this arena, but every firm needs this technology. This new job also gives Benjamin the opportunity to live in New York. His company is commuting distance from New York, so hell take the train to New Jersey and enjoy life in a new city. The new job, he said, is worth the move. Its a sales position and a great opportunity. Its a smaller company, which appeals to me. I like the entrepreneurial culture, the flat structure theres less bureaucracy. He said that it was worthwhile to stretch a bit in terms of looking for a job. While, in the end, he wasnt qualified for the original position he applied for on Ladders, his resume got in front of someone who was willing to take the time to read through it and determine where he might be a good fit. Theres nothing wrong with aiming a little higher, he said. Just dont aim too high. Apply for a job where this is a realm of possibility. Know what skills you can offer.Looking for a job requires constant vigilance, he said. I must have spoken to 80 to 100 people in this whole process, Benjamin said. I could have kept it going. Maybe I didnt do enough. Maybe I could have gotten a job sooner. But its pretty nasty out there.

Unique ways top companies help their employees manage stressUnique ways top companies help their employees manage stressMoney.Moola.Cash-ola. Whatever you want to call it, we all like to be compensated generously and fairly for the work we do.As nice as a bigsalary may be though, its not the only part of a persons job that keeps them passionate and motivated to go into work and give a hundred percent every day. There are other ways employers can motivate their teams besides a giantraise.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraIn fact, when asked what makes them stay at a job, employees said1) enjoying the work 2) having a job that fitsother areas of life, and 3) benefits were all more important factors than pay. And as for Millennials, they crave purpose more than a paycheck.Having said that, all of this reasoninggoes out the window if an employee gets overstressed employees in demandi ng jobs may suffer from stress levels so high that it can burn even the fruchtwein committed person out after awhile.Top companies have realized this and are offering their employeesa variety of unconventional waysto be and stay happy and ultimately avoid getting too stressed outwith their jobs. Here are some unique ways somecompaniesare helping their employees manage stress, some of which might be familiar to you.Mental well-being offeringsSituations can occur at work that affectsan employees health negatively. From temporary issues like lackof sleep and irritation to deeper problems like high blood pressure and headaches, a heavy workload can be hard on a persons health. Many companies are seeing and responding to this. For example,Airbnbprovides free yoga classes for their employees.Appleallows 30 minutes a day for employees to meditate.Nikeoffers access to relaxation rooms.Fun in-office activitiesMany people enjoy their jobs, but it could still stress them out. When they toil man y hours at work, it can be a big stress-buster to get away from their desks and do something fun for a few minutes. Software giantSalesforcepermits their employees a generous 56 hours a year to volunteer, along with a cash grant the employee can bestow on the charity of their choice. Medical tech companyStrykergives employees up to five days of paid volunteer time. This is a win-win endeavor, as the employee gets to donate their time to a charity of their choice, and reduce their work stress, while the employer gets a renewed employee that completestheir work more produ ctively.Make-life-easier perksTrying to handle errands and appointments while managing a heavy workload causes many employees stress, and some companies have stepped in to lighten the load.Google, once again paving the way in unique employee offerings, givesemployees access to a concierge that handles tasks from dinner reservations to making hair appointments.Proctor and Gamblegives their employees a free ride to work.Mattelgives parents 16 hours of school-related time off so they can be present at the parent-teacher conferences and field trips without dipping into vacation time.Facebookhas a healthcare facility on-site, so no driving to the walk-in clinic on a lunch hour for their employees. All of these help save employee time, decrease stress, and promote job satisfaction.Companies are increasingly realizing that stress is a thief of productivity and putting creative measures in place to stamp it out.Smaller businesses, while maybe not adding a climbing wall, are predicted to tak e a lesson fromthese giants and implement some of these perks into their employees work life as well.
